The quote above serves as a good example of what this book is all about. Dr. Gazipura takes the reader through different phases of understanding and deconstructing what it means to be socially anxious. He then introduces concrete steps anyone can take to help overcome social anxiety by focusing on taking bold action and positive self-affirmation.

Part One: The Problem

This book is divided into two parts. Part 1 is titled “The Problem.” Dr. Gazipura discusses just how anxiety can play nasty games with our psyche, causing severe damage to our own sense of self. For example, when involved in social situations, those who struggle with social anxiety may interpret their experience in intense ways:

In addition to fearing that everyone will reject us, our rejection sensor can also exaggerate how others feel about us. If someone says “no, thanks,” or “not right now,” we can feel like they are saying “I hate you. You are pathetic. Go away.” A simple “no” becomes complete revulsion. This sensitive rejection sensor leads to a heightened ability to perceive rejection around you. In conversations, you might be noticing and reacting to very subtle signs that indicate disapproval. Even though they are subtle, your sensor can pick up on them and it can feel just like someone is yelling “RE-jected!” in your face.

Part Two: The Solution

Part 2 of The Solution To Social Anxiety is centered around taking action now that the problem is completely understood. Dr. Gazipura offers the reader hope for not only surviving a social situation, but actually enjoying it.

What if it were possible for you to shift something inside of yourself, so that you could have better conversations with people you just met? Better yet, what if you could actually enjoy those conversations?

This book emphasizes the importance of action today, not tomorrow. Understanding the problem and the solution is only half of the game. You must be prepared to step out of your comfort zone, and fake it until you make it.

My Impressions

I felt this book was spot on in terms of getting exactly at the heart of what living with social anxiety feels like. I most appreciated the fact that the author lives with social anxiety himself. Knowing that he has successfully managed his own anxiety and is living a completely fulfilling life because of the steps he has taken inspires me to keep pushing myself everyday.

Throughout the entirety of the book I felt myself nodding yes in agreement. When he spoke of his own past struggles with social anxiety, I felt like he was speaking of my own.

The only complaint I have about this book is that it’s geared towards a male reader. The author does do a good job of caveating this tendency at the beginning of the book, stating that reader should overlook this. But, many references, examples, and scenarios involve approaching, speaking to, or dating women.

The Solution To Social Anxiety is ultimately a guide for men who are struggling to work past their anxiety so that they can initiate and maintain healthy relationships with women. But if you can take those examples and translate them to your own experience, then this book will serve you well.
